Aerial Yoga at the wellnesshotel

Lightness, relaxation, and longevity

author: Isabel Maus

More Than Just a Fitness Trend

Aerial yoga is much more than just an unusual form of exercise. It combines movement and relaxation, challenge and ease, strength and letting go. Whether it’s a dynamic session in a waist-high hammock with Pilates elements, a restorative Yin yoga class, a floating meditation, or a multi-day retreat –, the focus is always on the individual’s well-being.

Especially in a time when topics such as longevity, healthy living, and sustainable self-care are becoming increasingly important, Aerial Yoga offers a holistic approach. The practice helps maintain strength, flexibility, balance, and body awareness over the long term while simultaneously reducing stress and strengthening mental health.

Aerial Yoga combines the soothing elements of yoga with the lightness of floating. With the help of a special fabric suspended from the ceiling, entirely new possibilities for movement and relaxation emerge. It’s not just about fitness or athletic performance. The focus is on health, well-being, and taking a conscious break from everyday life.

While many exercise programs focus primarily on calorie burning and performance, Aerial Yoga takes a holistic approach. The practice combines strength, flexibility, relaxation, and mindfulness. It’s about doing something good for yourself, gaining new experiences, and strengthening both body and mind.

One fabric – many possibilities

A particular advantage of aerial yoga lies in its versatility. Depending on the type of class, the hammock is suspended at different heights, opening up a wide range of possibilities.

In dynamic Aerial Yoga, the hammock hangs at about hip height. Here, the focus is on flowing movement sequences, building strength, balance, and playful challenges. The practice is active, varied, and strengthens the entire body.

For Deep- or Yin- yoga, the hammock is set significantly lower, around knee height. This allows poses to be held longer and more calmly. The fabric supports the body, allows for deep relaxation, and promotes intense stretching with a special focus on recovery, fascia work, and flexibility.

Suitable for beginners and advanced practitioners

Aerial Yoga is suitable for both athletic beginners and experienced yoga practitioners. With the support of the hammock, many exercises can be individually adapted so that every participant can practice at their own level.

What is particularly fascinating is that poses become possible that often require a great deal of strength, technique, or years of practice on the floor. For example, a handstand or another inversion that seems unattainable for many people on the mat can be safely and playfully experienced in just a 45-minute introductory session under professional guidance. This builds confidence in one’s own body and often leads to impressive feelings of accomplishment in just a short time.

What Aerial Yoga Can Do for the Body

With regular and intensive practice, aerial yoga can have numerous positive effects on the body. Arms, legs, back, shoulders, and abdominal muscles are equally strengthened and stretched. The deep core muscles, in particular, are activated and support stable posture.

The combination of strength, endurance, flexibility, and mobility makes aerial yoga a holistic workout for the entire body. At the same time, joints are mobilized and flexibility is enhanced.

Many participants find the relief of pressure on the spine particularly beneficial. Swinging and hanging in the fabric creates space between the vertebrae, which can relieve pressure on the intervertebral discs. The fasciae are also intensively engaged through working with the sometimes narrow fabric straps.

Furthermore, the diverse movements can stimulate metabolism, digestion, and circulation. Inverted poses promote blood flow and are experienced by many participants as refreshing and invigorating.

Aerial yoga thus combines many factors that are currently discussed in connection with active and healthy aging—1—the so-called “longevity”—3—concept—1: strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, body awareness, relaxation, and mental health. Those who regularly train these skills are investing in long-term quality of life, vitality, and well-being.

Mental Lightness and New Perspectives

In addition to the physical aspects, Aerial Yoga is particularly inspiring for its effect on well-being. Floating in the fabric awakens curiosity, joy, and the desire to try something new in many people. Not infrequently, the sensation recalls the carefree nature of childhood and revives the inner child.

The hammock supports many yoga poses so effectively that exercises that often seem much more difficult on the ground are successfully achieved. This builds self-confidence and the courage to take on new challenges.

The change in perspective also plays a special role. Those who view the world upside down often experience a new perspective—not only physically but also mentally. Backbends feel easier, movements feel freer, and many participants report an intense sense of letting go.

At the same time, the aerial silks provide a sense of security. Enveloped in the fabric, a feeling of being supported arises, which can help you leave everyday life behind and reconnect more deeply with yourself.

Focusing on the sequences of movement and consciously experiencing the moment promote mindfulness and mental balance. Many participants leave the class with a sense of lightness as well as clarity and renewed energy.

Dynamism and relaxation in harmony

A special feature of our Aerial 3 offerings is the combination of active practice and deep relaxation. Because Aerial Yoga is not just about movement and challenge, but also about regeneration and letting go.

In our retreats , dynamic flows, playful inversions, and strengthening exercises complement thoughtfully designed relaxation sessions. Among the special highlights are Aerial Yoga Nidra and Sound in the Towel.

During Aerial Yoga Nidra –—yogic sleep in the aerial silks –—participants are gently supported and can sink into a state of deep physical and mental relaxation. The security of the silks aids in letting go and promotes deep regeneration.

In the session „Sound in the Towel“, the calming effect of singing bowls or other harmonious sounds combines with the sensation of floating. While the sling supports the body, the gentle vibrations help release tension and calm the mind.

The programs are complemented by breathing exercises, meditations, mantras, as well as longer initial and final relaxation sessions in the suspension cloth. It is precisely this conscious contrast between dynamic inverted poses and deeply relaxing sessions that makes our retreats so special.

Aerial-Suspension Meditation in the Weekly Program

Even outside of our retreats, guests can experience the relaxing side of Aerial Yoga. We regularly offerAerial-suspension meditations as part of the weekly program.

Gently wrapped in the fabric and floating lightly, a feeling of security and calm arises. Guided meditations, mindful breathing, and the gentle movement of the fabric help you let go of everyday life and recharge your energy.

Retreats, Yoga-3 Weeks, and Introductory Sessions

As part of our weekly rotating vacation program, we regularly offer introductory sessions. These are ideal for getting to know the fascinating combination of yoga and weightlessness. The Aerial 3 groups are intentionally limited to a maximum of ten participants, ensuring intensive support and personalized guidance.

A highlight at Pfalzblick are our in-house Yoga 3 weeks. These combine various yoga styles, relaxation activities, and mindful breaks into a holistic experience. An Aerial-3 Yoga-3 introductory session is always a fixed part of the program.

Several times a year, Aerial Yoga weekend retreats are also held with experienced external instructors.

No prior Aerial Yoga experience is required for the retreats . Basic physical fitness is helpful, but more important are openness, curiosity, and a willingness to try new things under expert guidance—playfully yet safely guided.

Important Notes

Aerial Yoga can generally be suitable for people who are overweight, as the fabric provides valuable support . The maximum weight capacity of our fabrics is 120 kilograms.

Aerial Yoga is not suitable during pregnancy or for those with elevated intraocular pressure or severe hypertension.

To protect the fabric and ensure a comfortable practice experience, we ask that you refrain from wearing jewelry. Additionally, your top should cover your armpits.

Those who experience aerial yoga often discover not only new ways of moving but also new perspectives. It is an invitation to take time for yourself, promote health and joy of life, and enjoy the soothing experience of floating.

Aerial Yoga is thus far more than a fleeting fitness trend. It is a practice for a better quality of life—1—today and tomorrow. A practice that strengthens the body, maintains flexibility, enhances inner balance, and helps you feel vibrant, healthy, and young. Body, mind, and soul are equally grateful.
