Castles & Rocks in the Palatinate

Immerse yourself in the world of Knights & Lords

Legendary castles and craggy rocks crown the top of the Palatinate and Alsace. Just 2 km away from the Hotel Pfalzblick, the ruins of Neudahn Castle sit enthroned on the peak of a mountain. The castle was built in the 13th century and expanded upon in the 16th century.  Even though the Upper and Lower Castles in the Neudahn group of castles were destroyed by the French in the 17th century, the Neudahn Castle with two battery towers, gate system and shield wall are still impressive even as ruins.

You can reach the Altdahn Castle in just 35 minutes on foot. It will impress you with the dizzying heights of medieval architecture. The Altdahn Castle belongs to the Dahn Castle Group along with the Grafendahn and Tanstein Castles, built close together on a rock formation. Together they make up the largest castle group in the Palatinate.

One of the most popular excursion destinations in the Palatinate is located just 18 km away on the Sonnenberg mountain: Reichsburg Trifels. This castle and the sister castles Anebos and Scharfenberg make up the Annweil Castles and were considered the most noble and politically important Palatinate castles in the Staufer period. Imagine how the knights, counts and military leaders came and left. King Richard the Lionhearted was even held prisoner at the Trifels Castle in the 12th century.

  • Tipp: The Rockland Legend Trail takes you by 11 castles. More on our hiking page

Bizarre Rocks

The Palatinate is rich on legends … They tell of elwetritsches, birdlike mythical creatures which are said to have lived here, or of the Devil's table, where the devil is said to have eaten. Knowing these legends makes this rocky wonderland appear even more mystical.

Enormous natural powers formed the bizarre rock formations. A total of 47 natural monuments and 24 viewing rocks enchant visitors with their shades of green, red and yellow.

  • Lämmerfelsen: This rock formation with prominent towers is one of the most beautiful in the Dahn Rockland – you have a great view of the Lämmerfelsen from our Panorama terrace and the restaurant at the Hotel Pfalzblick.
  • Teufelstisch: A landmark of the Palatinate and only 6 km away. This rock formation is said to have been the Devil's table. Der nur 6 km entfernte Teufelstisch ist ein Wahrzeichen der Pfalz. Der Fels soll als Tisch des Teufels gedient haben.
  • Well-known viewing rocks in Dahn are the Jungfernsprung, Schwalbenfelsen and Römerfelsen
  • With 52 climbing rocks within the territory of Dahn, it's a climbers paradise.

Our rooms are named for rocks

We are proud of our region: Just as we are a part of the Dahn Rockland, Dahn is also a part of the Hotel Pfalzblick. This interaction can be witnessed in the names of our rooms – they're named for famous rocks which characterize our region.
